Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a treatment option for patients with movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, people with uncontrolled muscle movements (dystonia) and for people who suffer from tremor. DBS is also an option for psychiatric disorders as intractable obsessive-compulsive disorder, and for multifocal epilepsy.

What is DBS?

Certain brain conditions can affect areas in the brain that have a vital role in movement, coordination, emotions and/or processing of information. The brain areas show abnormal activity in electrical impulses. DBS is a surgical procedure that involves implanting 1 or 2 electrodes in the brain connected to a battery, which deliver electrical impulses that block or change the abnormal activity in the targeted areas in the brain. DBS can reduce or temporarily prevent the symptoms of the brain condition.

Who is eligible for DBS?

DBS can be an option for patients whose brain condition is hard to treat with medication, behavioural therapy or when medication gives too many side-effects. Medication can be reduced after DBS, but usually is still needed.

Within UNCH HAGA Teaching Hospital (HagaZiekenhuis) is specialised in DBS for several conditions. You can download the DBS brochure via this link (in Dutch).
